Impressionism
LQ: How can experimentation lead to new styles?
IWBAT:
Our Composition:
Our composition was pretty good for a first try, I feel the timbre was nice as it was very smooth and the rhythm was pretty nice. We learned from last time and added the bass which made the sound really nice. I wish we could add more of a variety dynamics which really would make it sound nice. We used the guitar which just played 5 notes on the pentatonic scale and on the piano we added a great variety of notes on the pentatonic scale. I believe the harmony sounds very nice. I think we could have improved on the structure as it was really basic and could have been more complex. Otherwise, I feel that my group did a really good job at the impressionism piece.
IWBAT:
- Understand the elements of Impressionism
- Describe the main features of impressionism
- Develop an awareness of impressionism and Philosophy

Different Trains
LQ: What Elements does Reich do here
IWBAT:
My composition:
The instruments that we used in this piece were the Violin, Viola & Cello. The piece starts off with a Violin playing in a major key and then comes the Viola which plays an A, G, C in a low octave. The Viola overlaps with the train sounds. This piece uses ostinato (repetition). The first few bars are forte and then there is a crescendo into mezzo-forte. There is also an accelerando as the Viola enters. The train noises continue throughout the entire piece, there are male vocals every 2 bars. After 2 minutes, there is a slight ritardando. Directly after this, there is another crescendo. The piece is now fortissimo, the speed is allegretto.
IWBAT:
- Use Reich’s style
- Compose a piece 30 seconds long using Reich’s style
- Record your composition and put it on you blog
- Reflect on your composition

Aleotoric Music
LQ: How can we compose an Aleotoric piece?
IWBAT:
IWBAT:
Understand what Aleotoric music is
Comment musically on an aleotoric piece
Compose my own piece of Aleotoric music
Reflect on what I did.
Our Aleotoric Piece
I think my group did a pretty good job although I feel we could make it better by making it longer and possibly add an aleotoric bass which can enhance the sound of the piece making it sound a lot better otherwise we could also add more instruments other than the piano and the guitar. We could also have added some sound effects to the piece to make it sound a bit more dynamic than it does, despite that i believe we did a pretty good job considering the fact that by the time we got used to the format we had less time to actually create and record the piece. If we had to do this again I think we probably would have chosen and appropriate tempo to make this piece more nice and soothing and would probably add a bunch of different dynamics to make the piece more interesting. Although, I liked the melody and the harmony so I would probably use the same format and the same idea behind it.

Clapping Music
LQ: How can patterns work in music
IWBAT:
IWBAT:
- Analyze clapping music
- Perform clapping music
- Reflect and critically analyze your performance
Blog reflection:
I feel our performance was alright, not the best but what we could do because there are so many things we could improve on. To start with the claps were not really in sync which made it sound a bit odd, then we could have added more of a form and also edited to shift like the example showed by Ms. Drury but unfortunately we had no idea of how we could achieve that as none of us was familiar with and song editing software apart from garage band in which we didn’t know how to do that. I feel our performance would be a 3-4 because our performance was adequate whereas my responding to this would be a 5-6 as i feel like it is substantial.
Music and the Fibonacci series
LQ: What is the Fibonacci sequence
IWBAT:
IWBAT:
- Understand the sequence
- Use the sequence in music
- Compose the piece for at least 1 minute long using the sequence
- Record your composition
- A melody is expected
- An added bass line (left hand is encouraged)
Blog questions:
What is the Fibonacci sequence:
It is a sequence that contains 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13 and so on which works by adding the 2 previous numbers to make the next one. It is said to be found all around nature for example a conch, our arms, etc.
How is it used in music:
What you can do is that you can take the numbers of the sequence and select a key, then find the notes corresponding to the numbers and play them.
Fibonacci piece composed
This is our piece which is in the key of C major and I feel my group and I did a pretty good job although it would be better if we would be able to add the bass line which unfortunately we were not able to do but otherwise I am pretty satisfied with our composition.
